And we are going to see if we can find some slang, some vocabulary, some idioms, some mistakes — Im sure I made some grammar mistakes when I was eleven — to see if we could learn English through my embarrassment.

Dear diary — a classic way to start any diary entry in English, by the way; "Dear diary", like youre talking to someone like youre writing a letter.

Thats normally what we do.

We have "stick to it" again. This is like, stay committed to the relationship. Dont give up on the relationship.

And also we have "on and off for a while".

We can say that with relationships, youre "on and off".

Shes being so unreasonable saying that Ive been talking about her behind her back and yelling at me on MSN! Whats that about?

And shes… And she… What is that handwriting?

Okay, lets break this down.

I was so dramatic as an eleven-year-old.

I dont know. You know where that came from. Im not dramatic anymore.

So first off, shes been saying that Ive been talking about her behind her back — classic phrase that we say.

If you "talk about someone behind their back", youre talking about them without them knowing, and normally youre saying negative things about them.

Like: Oh, I hate her dress. Oh, she looks terrible in that.

And also notice how Im using the present perfect tense here.

Im saying "Ive had" a big fight with Charlotte. Ive had.

So sometimes we might use the present perfect tense for a recent event or an event where the consequences or the feelings of that event are still relevant now.

So clearly, the fight was still relevant in my life.

Clearly, maybe we were still not on talking terms. And I was still angry about it.

So Im gonna use the present perfect cause its relevant now.

Then we had "yelling at me".

We always say "yell at" "shout at" "scream at".

Normally, if its a verb and you are communicating with someone, but you dont really want to reply, youre like… its normally "at", "yell at", "scream at", "shout at".

Youre not expecting them to say anything back.

Okay, this is where it gets serious, alright? This is where the real drama goes down. Okay.

Even when I do, I tell her first, she gives me a look, and then at the end of lunch time: Why did you ditch me?

Classic. "Ditching someone" is a British slang word. It might be American as well.

When we "ditch" someone, we just leave them.

Normally in a place thats out of your home and youre with them, and then you just leave, you ditch them, so theyre on their own.

And also, this is useful.

She gives me a look. That is a lovely little phrase.

"To give someone a look" is always a negative look.

Its always like a… Or maybe its a… Or maybe its a… You know, normally, "giving someone a look" is a negative thing, very different to "giving someone the eye".

If you "give someone the eye", thats normally like — Hey. How are you?

You know, "giving someone the eye" is "I like you"; but "giving someone a look" is most of the time negative.

Oh, my words, she drives me nuts!

"Driving me nuts" is just another version of "driving me crazy". Makes me go… More drama with Jenny! Me and Jenny were just not good friends.

Dear diary, I hate Jenny!

This is what happened today.

I walk in and Jenny is talking to Lara and she looks at me funny.

Interesting. Now, Im telling a story about something that happened in the past, but Im using the present simple.

We do this a lot is like a stylistic choice.

If youre telling a story about something that happened in the past, you can use the present simple.

So I walk in. Jenny is talking to Laura, and she looks at me funny.

Cause it, I dont know, it helps you feel like the person whos listening to my story.

Theyre here with me.

Its like a stylistic choice.

And then Laura goes, "I dont know whether or not I want to be your friend." Oh, interesting.

So I sit down and Ryan and Josh come up to me.

Thats another one as well — "come up to me" as a phrasal verb, "to come up to someone" is like to approach them.

Ryan and Josh come up to me and start laughing.

Then when we all sit down, Lara goes to me.

Thats a very common slang way of "speaking" as well — She "goes to me".

Instead of saying "she says to me", well say "she goes to me".

So, um, I sat down and my mom went to me, "What are you doing here?" "Went to me", "go to me" instead of "said to me", its a weird one. Its very informal.

Then it turns out that Jenny told everyone about when two years ago, I flashed my bum at her.

"Flashing someone" means to show your private parts to them.

And I thought that would be funny. And it is funny.

Oh my goodness, "dumped". "Broken up with". If you "dump someone", you break up with them.

See, I was sort of feeling that way anyway.

So I grew up in church and in my house, there were just certain things you didnt do.

Um, and it… just just listen to this. Okay.

Okay. On to another subject. Today, my topic is: swearing.

"The works", you know, this is a phrase we say… when we say "the works", we mean all of it.

Whoa, "face to face". Lovely phrase. Just means when youre in person with them — face to face.

Not to be confused with a "heart to heart".

If you have a "heart to heart", it means you are having a open, honest discussion with someone.

You talk about your feelings. You are vulnerable. A "heart to heart".

Also not to be confused with "eye to eye".

If you "see eye to eye with someone", it means you agree with them.

So we spoke for ages and ages, but now I think I finally see eye to eye with my boss. We agree.

Thats a very youthful way of speaking, to put "well" in front of an adjective.

Oh, I am well annoyed about that!

To put "well" in front of it. Its not grammatically correct. Its just a kind of slang, youthful way of speaking.

I dont know if Americans or Australians do it, but definitely in Britain, youll hear that a lot with young, cool people.

So if youre young and cool, put "well" in front of an adjective. Why not?

Everyone loves Laura.

Normally, I was writing about things that were affecting me still.
