5 Last Chance?
Tony Bullimore: Holding my injured hand out of the water, I quickly stumble back to the cuddy for a small first-aid kit stored there. I wrap the bloody stub with cotton wool and bandages, but within ten minutes, the dressings fall off into the water. Fortunately, the bleeding stops after a half-hour, and the cold has numbed the pain.
Its crazy, but I have to go back to the companionway and dive to the door once again. Ive got no choice. I have to get to the life raft.
This time I make it through the hatch with no trouble, and I see the life raft about 16 feet away. By the time I swim to it, my lungs are bursting. I have to turn back to the cabin, where I surge through the hatch, gasping for air.
I catch my breath, and five minutes later I try again. Knife in hand, I grab two of the restraining ropes and manage to cut them before I run out of air.
I am exhausted. I have to take a break. The pitch-black cuddy is still relatively dry. I find a shelf about 18 inches wide along one wall and slide onto it, grinding my ribs on the sharp outer edge as I do. My shoulders are jammed against the hull. There isnt enough room to turn.
I dont care. Im so tired. I just want to sleep. My eyes wont stay open. So tired and so cold ...
Canberra: One aircraft ideal for long-distance rescues is a long-range, antisubmarine patrol plane called the Orion. Most of the Royal Australian Air Forces Orion crews were on Christmas leave and had to be recalled. But by dawn on Monday, January 6, the first of five Orions took off from Adelaide. After a more than 1100-nautical-mile flight to Perth, in Western Australia, they refueled and began the search.
Jackson-Calway then phoned to see if the Royal Australian Navy had a vessel available for rescue. He was in luck. The 4100-ton frigate H.M.A.S. Adelaide was in Perths port and could be readied to sail within hours.
As the ship got ready, the air crews were already searching. After four hours of steady flying, they reached the area of the ocean where the signals were last registered. Waves the size of five-story buildings tumbled across the surface, turning the ocean almost completely white.
The crew spotted an overturned hull rising on the crest of a wave. Flying as low as possible, the pilot swept over the boat. There was something tied to the rudder. It was a man, Thierry Dubois, waving frantically.
The storm had snapped off his mast and completely flipped over his boat. Dubois had somehow managed to scramble onto the overturned hull.
Swooping low, the Orion crew dropped him life rafts and survival packs to keep him alive until a rescue ship came. Then they started to look for Exide Challenger, but with only 45 minutes of search time left, they had to turn back without success.
A second Orion arrived just over an hour later. Sweeping back and forth over the search area, the rescue crew turned up nothing. Finally, flying at the lowest possible speed, they saw it. The overturned Exide Challenger rose up on a wave, the number 33 clearly visible on her side.
Her keel was gone. In its place was a black gash, like a wound, on the hull. At times, the yacht completely disappeared under waves.
The crew marked the Exides position, took photos of the overturned boat and called in their sighting. “No sign of any survivor,” they radioed to their base.
Within hours the photo and the drama of the two seamen—one found, one lost —was relayed via news media around the world.
